As a business owner you should have a firm grasp on what marketing is and the different forms of it that you may want to us to help boost your business. Marketing is often split down in to online and offline. Traditionally offline marketing often took precedence but with more and more people using the internet to find products and services they want, businesses are having to get on board with online marketing. Web marketing is the marketing you carry on online and is linked to your website. Some companies that do not have a website still do online marketing by advertising via social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter by advertising on directory sites. This can work well, but is often more effective when backed up by having their own website.
Marketing companies will often have their own views on which elements are most important in terms of increasing their client’s visibility on the search engines and this may vary from client to client even though the overall goal is the same.
If you are going to be taking on your own marketing, it is worth investing in some training and setting aside some time to fully understand what you need to do and how to check your results.

On site search engine optimisation is very important and can help boost your site on the search engine results pages. If you are struggling to get towards the top of the Goole, Bing or Yahoo search results for some of your main keywords then you may want to revisit your on page SEO.
The first things to check is that your meta data is all complete for each page and relevant. Although there are many discussions about how much weight these now carry, it is shown to help to some degree. Make sure that each page has a unique title, description and a selection of keywords. Often Google will use this information to display on the search results page. The meta data should be taken from the content within the page and the title and description should be written in such a way that will entice viewers to click on the link to your site.
You should also be adding regular and relevant content to your site as often as possible. This content needs to be unique so you cannot just copy and paste content from another website and expect to help with your rankings. Having a blog or news section is an easy way to add fresh new content.

When you have a website it is important to know how it is performing on the search engines. The first thing you need to do is track how many visitors you are getting to the site. This will show you an overview of how many people are visiting you site on a daily basis. Some servers have stats packages installed on them to allow you to do this or you may wish to use Google Analytics which is user friendly and free. If you find that you are not getting many visitors to the site then there may be an issue with your rankings. To check your rankings you need to have a list of at least 20 keywords or phrases that you want to be found for. These phrases are what people type in on the search engines, which then pulls up a list that is relevant to that term. Often the more generic phrases will be a lot harder to compete for so ideally you want to have a mix of generic and long tail phrases so see the bigger picture. You can track these yourself by going on to the search engine like Google and typing the keyword in. You have to be careful when doing this as Google will often order the sites you see in order of how often you have visited them rather than if you were just a member of the public searching for the first time

Some companies become extremely focused on the number of visitors they get to their website, and although this can be an indication that your site is performing well, may not actually produce that much business for you. They may spend hours studying the statistics and wondering why they are getting so much traffic but not turning over much.

Qualifying your audience will possible reduce the number of visitors to your site but will mean the quality will improve – by qualify I mean people that are actually very interested in your business or products rather than landing on your site accidentally.

There are a number of ways of doing this depending on what marketing avenues you use. If you use Google Adwords, be sure to chose the correct keywords. Do not just go for broad phrases as this will be costly and also a large percentage of visitors will not interact or purchase through your site if it is not what they are really looking for.

When choosing a company to use for a project or purchase, many people reply up on reviews. There are thousands or independent review site out there that allow users to comment and often leave a star rating for a company that they have had an experience with.

You can of course add reviews and testimonials to your own site, but people are aware that often these are biased and will only show them the positive comments that have been left.

Social Media websites are also a type of review site for many businesses as customers can post their feedback on your wall (if allowed). Even if you do not have a presence on these sites, people can start their own groups up to discuss your company or even just mention you in their own posts.

One tip I have is always try to respond to reviews, especially the negative ones. If a customer leaves a review that is unfair try and state the reason for the situation and how it was rectified or why it could not be. Also make sure that you invite a user who has left bad feedback to contact you directly to discuss the problem in greater detail and allow you to come up with a solution. This shows other potential customers, that like any business, you have problems and issues arise but that you deal with them promptly and professionally.
