If you have a business where your staff are given a laptop to use its important to remember that this could cause a risk as far as data protection goes with this in mind there are certain things that you can do to ensure documents and client details are not accessed unlawfully.

Firstly with and company laptops it’s important to disable the USB ports for storage devices and also the CD drive if it can burn discs (provided this function is not needed) this should help to stop any data being saved onto another device.

It’s also important to issue a ‘Terms of Use’ document to your staff stating that activity on their laptops will be monitored and that it is forbidden to store any client details or to forward any without consent from management.

The laptops need to have an encryption key that is requested as soon as the laptop is started up, this will protect any data on the PC should it be stolen.

It’s usually more secure to keep the laptops on company premises than allow your staff to take them home.
